John Coltrane?s ?Syeeda?s Song Flute,? and originals from the WeBop classroom, the CD covers the full range of jazz music from New Orleans marches and Delta blues to free jazz. My Take on the CD
As a person who used to play a lot of jazz music back when I was younger and a person who still enjoys listening to jazz music, this CD was great! Full of great music and fun, you can tell through the music that the people in this group of musicians had a blast making the album and you and your family will love to listen and experience this music as well. So introduce your kids today to some great jazz music today and let their imagination soar through the music that will get your and their feet tapping!

US increases travel warning to 14 Mexican states (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? The U.S. State Department is recommending that Americans avoid travel to all or parts of 14 of 31 Mexican states in the widest travel advisory issued since Mexico stepped up its drug war in 2006.

The department advises against any nonessential travel in all of Chihuahua, Coahuila and Tamaulipas, which border the U.S, and in the central state of Durango, as well as sections of 10 other states.

It advises caution for traveling in three other border states and many areas of central and western Mexico where drug cartels have been warring.

The advisory issued Wednesday says U.S. citizens have been victims of drug violence, including killings, kidnappings and carjackings.

The previous warning in April 2011 recommended avoiding travel in all of just two states, Tamaulipas and Michoacan, and parts of eight others.

It is the first time the State Department listed advisories for each of Mexico's 31 states, including the federal district of Mexico City, where there is no warning. There were also no warnings for the states that are home to Cancun and Cabo San Lucas, two popular tourist destinations for Americans.

The advisory seems to take pains not to make even violence-plagued tourist destinations off limits.

It recommends against nonessential travel in the Pacific coast state of Sinaloa, home to Mexico's most powerful cartel of the same name, and one of Mexico's most violent states. It advises visitors there to exercise caution at night and in the morning, even though the statement also says "incidents of violence are occurring more frequently in tourist areas" in Mazatlan.

Some large cruise lines have stopped their ports of call in Mazatlan.

While the advisory warns against travel in most parts of southern Guerrero state, it doesn't include the resort city of Acapulco, even though Acapulco has seen a significant spike in violence from warring cartels.

"In Acapulco, defer nonessential travel to areas further than two blocks inland of the Costera Miguel Aleman Boulevard, which parallels the popular beach areas," the statement says.

There have been several incidents of violence on the costera, the main tourist road, in the last year.

Many Mexican elected officials decried the warning for its potential impact on tourism and the economy.

Mexican Foreign Minister Patricia Espinosa said Mexico does everything it can to ensure the safety of any person in the country, and said the number of visitors to Mexico is steadily increasing.

Like a hungry predator, investors are on the prowl for yield. Many quality companies that were yielding 4% or 5% a year ago now have dividend yields below 4%, as prices have been bid up on nearly any stock with a respectable dividend.

As a result, investors are forced to look in some more exotic places. Real estate investment trusts (REITs), business development corporations (BDCs) and especially master limited partnerships (MLPs) have all gained popularity over the past year.

One area that has been a bit overlooked is foreign dividend payers.

There are quite a few American depositary receipts (ADRs) that pay a decent dividend ? often more than their American contemporaries. However, you need to keep a few things in mind.

The dividend isn?t always paid quarterly. Most American companies that pay a dividend do so on a quarterly basis. However, foreign companies sometimes pay only twice a year or even just once annually.

Currency fluctuations may alter the amount of the dividend per ADR that you receive. The company usually pays its dividend in the local currency. If you?re invested in a Brazilian company, management will think about and pay its dividend in terms of Brazilian reals, not dollars. Any yield consideration will be based on its share price trading on the Bovespa (the Brazilian stock exchange). Holders of the ADR will also receive a dividend, but it will be dependent on how much was paid in the local currency and the exchange rate.

A Brazilian company could keep its dividend payment constant from one year to the next, but if the real depreciates in price, you?ll get fewer dollars. If the real appreciates, you?ll receive more dollars.

Therefore, for investors who prefer companies with a steady history of dividend growth, foreign ADRs may not match those objectives perfectly.

But that doesn?t mean there aren?t interesting income opportunities in foreign markets. As long as you can handle the currency fluctuations and the irregular payments, the yields are attractive enough to make it worth your while to take a look at some.

For example, CSN (NYSE: SID) is the sixth-largest steelmaker in the world. Based in Brazil, it earned R$2.9 billion in the first three quarters of 2011 and paid R$1.9 billion in dividends. The company pays its dividend in May and is expected to yield about 6% based on the current price.

Another Brazilian company with a healthy dividend is CPFL Energy (NYSE: CPL), the country?s largest privately owned energy company, with 13% of the national market. Roughly 75% of CPFL?s revenue is regulated, which means the company?s cash flow is rather predictable. That should give shareholders confidence that their dividend is secure. As long as the Brazil?s economy continues to grow, so should its dividend.

CPFL generated R$2.3 billion in cash flow from operations over the last 12 months and paid R$1.3 billion in dividends. It?s expected to yield 5.5% on today?s price.

Don?t Forget to Pay Uncle Santos

Often, when you receive dividends from a foreign company, taxes will be automatically taken out of your dividend payment. Since you already paid taxes on those dividends to the foreign government, the IRS will not make you pay it again. In fact, they?ll give you a tax credit against your U.S. tax obligations.

So, if you earned $1,000 in foreign dividends and paid $250 in taxes to Brazil, for example, you would be entitled to a $250 tax credit on your U.S. taxes.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Norton Zinder, a biologist whose research into the genetic material of viruses and bacteria led to a greater understanding of the most fundamental building blocks of life, has died at age 83.

His death was confirmed on Wednesday by The Rockefeller University in New York City, the institution he joined in 1952 and at which he spent most of his career. Zinder died on Friday after a long illness.

Zinder was a prodigious talent, graduating from Columbia University at the age of 18 and making one of his most important discoveries while still a graduate student in his early twenties.

Working with Joshua Lederberg, he discovered that viruses could transfer genes from one bacterium to another, a previously unknown mechanism of producing genetic variety that the team chose to call 'transduction'.

The discovery, made several years before the structure of DNA was fully understood, would allow later researchers to manipulate infectious strains of bacteria that had otherwise become resistant to antibiotics, among other uses.

He continued his work in the burgeoning field of molecular biology at The Rockefeller University, helping to shed light on the functions of DNA, RNA and proteins - the most basic molecules of life.

Later in his career, he became an influential voice in shaping the policies and ethics that govern scientific research. In the 1970s, he chaired a committee that examined the work of the National Cancer Institute, resulting in a major reorganization of the institute's research efforts.

He also was a founding member of the Human Genome Project, an international effort to identify and map out the roughly 20,000 genes that appear in the 23 pairs of chromosomes found in most human cells.

Zinder was born in New York City on November 7, 1928. He was married to the former Marilyn Estricher, who died in 2004, and is survived by two sons and five grandchildren, according to The Rockefeller University.

Oil drops below $97 as traders eye US supplies

LONDON (AP) ? Oil prices slipped below $97 a barrel on Tuesday as traders worried that U.S. crude supplies will continue to rise because of weak demand.

Benchmark crude for March delivery fell 61 cents at $96.30 a barrel by late morning European time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 93 cents to settle at $96.91 on Monday.

Brent crude rose 33 cents to $116.26 a barrel on the ICE Futures Exchange in London.

Crude inventories likely rose about 2.3 million barrels last week, according to analysts surveyed by Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos. The American Petroleum Institute announces its weekly supply data later Tuesday while the Energy Department's Energy Information Administration reports its figures Wednesday.

Crude supplies in the U.S. have increased for the past three weeks at a key Cushing, Oklahoma delivery point amid a mild U.S. winter.

"There's plenty of supply for light, sweet crude oil, and there's no real demand for gasoline right now," energy consultant Cameron Hanover said in a report. "It's cold enough to keep people inside, but it is not cold enough for them to be burning much oil or gas to stay warm."

Investors are also closely watching rising tensions between Western powers and Iran, the world's third-largest crude exporter. The U.S. imposed new sanctions Monday that are designed to make it more difficult for Iran to sell its oil through traditional banking routes and help dissuade the Middle Eastern nation from developing its nuclear program.

European nations plan to stop buying Iranian oil by summer while Iran has threatened to block oil tanker shipments in the Persian Gulf if the embargo is implemented. The U.S. and Israel have said they will not allow Iran to build nuclear weapons.

"If Israel were to strike Iran in an attempt to slow its nuclear program, energy prices would most likely spike in excess of $150 per barrel," Richard Soultanian of NUS Consulting said. "We expect the markets will suffer bouts of extreme volatility in the coming weeks being largely driven by news headlines."

In other energy trading, heating oil was up 1.8 cents at $3.19 per gallon and gasoline futures rose 0.4 cents to $2.93 per gallon. Natural gas added 1.7 cent to $2.57 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Blood, saliva and DNA are keys to murder case (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? A trial opening this week has the dramatic elements of a TV crime show ? a bloody murder scene, two pretty women and a love triangle that could have precipitated the killing.

But other factors have made this case even more compelling. The defendant was a highly respected veteran police detective and the evidence that led to her arrest is 26 years old.

The case of Stephanie Lazarus has already inspired multiple TV reality shows. On Monday, attorneys will present their opening statements outlining the evidence.

Without the science of DNA, developed in intervening years, Lazarus, 51, probably would never have been charged with the murder of Sherri Rasmussen and would still be working at the Los Angeles Police Department.

It is the classic cold case which gathered dust in a police evidence room for decades until a new review suddenly raised suspicions among detectives who wondered if one of their own could be involved.

Lazarus had been mentioned in the original file because she had been the ex-girlfriend of Rasmussen's husband, John Ruetten. He discovered his wife dead, shot and bludgeoned presumably by an unknown intruder.

The murder scene had blood spattered walls, overturned furniture and Rasmussen's body bludgeoned and shot through with three bullets. She was 29-years-old, a nursing director at a hospital and a newlywed. She and Ruetten married a few months before she was killed.

Investigators on the case noted there had been a series of robberies in the neighborhood and chalked it up to a killing during a burglary. There was one piece of physical evidence that intrigued detectives who were giving the case a second look. It was saliva from a bite wound on the victim's arm that had never been analyzed.

Back in 1986, when the killing occurred, it was assumed the bite came from a man ? probably a burglar who broke into the couple's condominium.

But a DNA laboratory came up with a shocking result. The bite came from a woman.

In a TV-like maneuver, detectives secretly followed Lazarus until they could recover a cup from which she drank. They gathered her DNA and the result was a probable match. The investigation had taken a new turn and police faced the devastating possibility that the murder was committed by one of their own, a veteran detective who worked just across the hall from the robbery homicide division.

Lazarus has pleaded not guilty and expressed shock during an interview with detectives that she would be accused of such a crime.

"You're accusing me of this? ... "Am I on `Candid Camera' or something? This is insane,'" she said. " This is absolutely crazy "

Rasmussen's parents have accused police of dropping the ball when the killing occurred. They said little note was taken of their efforts to point detectives toward Lazarus who had been in a romantic relationship with Ruetten before his marriage to Rasmussen.

A lawyer for the Rasmussen family has said that Lazarus confronted her rival at the hospital where she worked and told her: "If I can't have John, no one can."

When Rasmussen's father continued to prod detectives to look at the ex-girlfriend as a suspect, attorney John Taylor said he was told: "You've been watching too much TV."

In subsequent years, Lazarus continued to move up the ladder in the LAPD, becoming a detective with a specialty in art forgeries. She married a colleague and they adopted a daughter. The former detective has been in custody since 2009. Her lawyer, Mark Overland, has hinted he has some witnesses who could absolve her. And he is questioning the reliability of the DNA evidence.

Defense attorney Dana Cole, who is not involved in the case, predicted that the defense will launch a fierce challenge of the DNA evidence, claiming it was contaminated during collection and further degraded as years passed.

"They have to attack the DNA," said Cole. "The typical defense in cases like this is to call experts to say there is DNA contamination and the evidence is not reliable," he said.

As for the love triangle, he said, "It provides motive. No question about that. But it's not conclusive. You still have to prove the defendant is responsible. There are many love triangles in which no one gets murdered."
