American Red Cross celebrates Freedom Blood Drive with free T-shirt, apple pie

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The American Red Cross will host its annual Celebrate Freedom Blood Drive from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 4 at the Red Cross Portland Donor Center at 3131 North Vancouver Avenue in Portland, Oregon. The Celebrate Freedom event helps to strengthen vital blood collections during the summer, a time when it becomes more difficult to schedule blood and platelet donors.

This year the Celebrate Freedom 2012 Blood Drive will include a t-shirt and free apple pie from Shari's Restaurants, for all presenting blood and platelet donors (while supply lasts). The newly crowned Miss Oregon 2012, Rachel Berry, will be on-hand to greet donors and hand out apple pies, this will be her first public appearance since her crowning on the evening of June 30.

The Celebrate Freedom event is one of the most popular blood drives of the year and appointments are strongly advised. The Red Cross wants this event to be enjoyable for everyone and to provide you with excellent service. Please call 1-800-RED CROSS to reserve your appointment time or go online and enter sponsor code: celebrateatpdx

Alert regarding the need for blood: The recent heat wave and storms are affecting blood and platelet collections across the country. The American Red Cross is reporting that blood collections have been significantly disrupted by the severe storms that hit the Midwest and mid-Atlantic areas. We critically need more donations, and are urging people who can give to do so now. Power outages, fallen trees and other storm impacts mean that blood donors have been unable to get to donor centers and blood drives. Dozens of Red Cross blood drives have been cancelled, resulting in the shortfall of nearly 1,000 units of blood and platelets.

How to Donate Blood
Simply call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver's license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
