Travel Insurance Tips ? Business Travel Success Plan | Business ...

One of the greatest things to happen to the world of travel in recent years is the advent of low cost airlines. Not only do they offer flight business travel that is cheaper than any previous airlines by far, but they also offer some other great innovations in booking and paying for flights. Part of the growth in popularity of these airlines is that they are so easy to work with online.

Unlike conventional airlines that use ticket agents and travel agents and require you to buy your tickets in person, the low cost airlines made everything available through a simple and comprehensive website that everyone could understand and use. The method of selling air tickets became so popular that these airlines are teaching the more traditional airlines how to act and are leading the way in innovation in the sale and marketing of these flights.

Over the last eleven years of traveling the globe I have learned many different lessons about business travel.

Whether you are a seasoned travel expert or a recent college graduate getting ready for that first trip, I am sure that you will learn a few things from my dissertation below.

Business travel is weary on the family and can cause hardships that are difficult to put into words. When you are out of town, life around your house carries on in every sense. Your grass continues to grow, your power continues to flow, your kids have recitals and ball practices, and your spouse has meetings. Don?t forget the small things and check in with your family members. Your not being around means that they have to do the things that you normally accomplish.

This is also important ? Make sure you have travel insurance in your travel plan checklist.

During your travel make sure to make time to take care of yourself as well. You will be eating at fine restaurants all over the world. You will get to sample local cuisines that you have never before had. Your body will suffer from the overload of food and beverages. Make time to go to your hotels gyms between work hours and dinner. Simply working out for 30 mins. each afternoon should keep you in fighting form for the meetings that you have coming up during the trip. It will also limit the perpetual expansion of the waste line from the foods that you are eating.

For meetings and arrival times, make sure to plan on showing up fifteen to twenty minutes before your meeting time. Showing up late to meetings is unacceptable for both your clients and for your company.

Always dress for success, never show up to your meetings in anything less than a Shirt, Tie, and Coat. Showing up in less than that attire for many companies is a sign of disrespect. While they may be sporting the latest in Golf apparel you need to sport something more along the lines of Donald Trump.

Another important tip is to ensure that you have availed one of the best travel insurance from a leading travel insurer.

During the travel stages of your event plan on staying in mid-level accommodations. Never try to hit your company up for first class accommodations. The mid-level accommodation shows that you are willing to save the company money while not sacrificing your personal well-being. The mid-level accommodation will provide you with acceptable bedding and laundry services and a good night sleep.

As a final point keep in mind that you are representing your company. Conduct yourself at all times as if you were trying to win that coveted job spot. Because just as you interviewed for your current job. You are interviewing your company for future business with your clients.

Newark mayor: Romney business record is fair game

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory Booker is backing off comments he made earlier Sunday, when he criticized President Barack Obama's re-election campaign for its attacks on Bain Capital, the private equity firm once run by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

During an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press," said he found such attack ads "nauseating" and called them a "distraction from the real issues."

Later Sunday, however, Booker released a YouTube video in which he said it is "reasonable" for the Obama campaign to examine Romney's business record since Romney himself has made it "a centerpiece of his campaign."

Booker says his earlier remarks were intended to express his "profound frustration" with negative campaigning. And he reiterated that he believes Obama "more than deserves re-election."

(AP Photo/Pablo Martinez Monsivais)

(AP) ? President Barack Obama and NATO allies declared Sunday that the end of the long and unpopular Afghanistan war is in sight even as they struggled to hold their fighting force together in the face of dwindling patience and shaky unity.

From his hometown and the city where his re-election operation hums, Obama spoke of a post-2014 world when "the Afghan war as we understand it is over." Until then, though, remaining U.S. and allied troops face the continued likelihood of fierce combat.

Gen. John Allen, the top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, offered a stern warning Sunday that the plan to give Afghan forces the lead in fighting next summer won't take coalition troops out of harm's way. "It doesn't mean that we won't be fighting," Allen said. "It doesn't mean that there won't be combat."

The fate of the war is both the center of this summit and a topic no one is celebrating as a mission accomplished. The alliance already has one foot out the Afghanistan door, Obama has his ear attuned to the politics of an economy-driven presidential election year and other allies are pinching pennies in a European debt crisis.

As NATO powers and other nations contributing to the war effort gathered, the alliance's top officer, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, asserted that "there will be no rush for the exits" in Afghanistan. "Our goal, our strategy, our timetable remain unchanged," he said.

In fact, the strategy has shifted many times over the course of more than 10 years of war, and the goal narrowed to objectives focused on the long-term security of the mostly Western nations fighting there. The timetable has also moved, despite the overall commitment to keep foreign forces in Afghanistan into 2014.

Tension over newly elected French President Francois Hollande's pledge to end his country's combat mission two years early infused the meeting. German Chancellor Angela Merkel pointedly cited the credo of the allies in the Afghanistan war, "in together, out together," and her foreign minister cautioned against a "withdrawal competition" by coalition countries.

Hollande said he was merely being pragmatic in keeping a campaign pledge to pull combat troops this year but this still would "let the alliance continue to work."

While France's new posture obviously rattled the leaders, Allen betrayed no concern about the coalition's common purpose coming unglued. "The mantra of this particular mission has been in together, out together," he told reporters. "And I'm not seeing, frankly, many voices being raised that would oppose that."

Obama warned of hard days ahead. Still, he said NATO envisions a decade of transformation after 2014, with the United States still contributing money and some residual forces but out of the war itself. The alliance was sealing plans on Sunday and Monday to shift foreign forces off the front lines next year to put Afghan troops up front.

"What this NATO summit reflects is that the world is behind the strategy that we've laid out," Obama said after lengthy talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai. "Now it's our task to implement it effectively."

The shift to Afghan forces, despite their uneven performance under U.S. and other outside tutelage so far, is in large part a response to plummeting public support for the war in Europe and the United States, contributors of most of international troops now fighting the Taliban-led insurgency.

No other nations have announced plans to follow suit behind France and remove troops early. More such shifts appear likely, however, as each country eyes the clock and its own tight pocketbook. Although the 130,000-member fighting force ? dominated by 98,000 U.S. troops? could absorb combat withdrawals by other partners in the Afghan coalition, alliance leaders are struggling to maintain the status quo.

A deal is expected during the summit that would see France bring combat forces out of the sometimes restive province where they are based, but leave training forces or other support in place. That is the model followed by the Netherlands, Canada and probably Australia, which intends to bring most of its 1,550 combat personnel home next year.

In all cases, politicians were heeding political imperatives about a war that has gone on much longer than ever envisioned.

A majority of Americans now say the war is unwinnable or not worth continuing. Only 27 percent of Americans say they back the effort while 66 percent oppose the war, a new low, according to an AP-GfK poll released earlier this month.

Presidential politics shadowed the summit. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney accused Obama of overseeing looming defense cuts that he said would undermine NATO's mission, without noting that many Republicans voted for the deal.

"An alliance not undergirded by military strength and U.S. leadership may soon become an alliance in name only," Romney wrote in an op-ed in the Chicago Tribune. "At the same time that President Obama has been weakening our military, he has sent the message ? intentionally or not ? that the worth of NATO has diminished in America's eyes."

Thousands of demonstrators upset with the war in Afghanistan, climate change and the erosion of union rights marched through downtown Chicago as the leaders met.

Some are calling for the dissolution of the 63-year-old NATO military alliance. Others carried signs that read: "War(equals)Debt" and "NATO, Go Home."

Karzai said his nation is looking forward to the end of war, "so that Afghanistan is no longer a burden on the shoulder of our friends in the international community, on the shoulders of the United States and our other allies."

With all the talk of the war winding down, Allen's comments served as a sobering reminder that the transition to Afghan leadership in the fighting does not drop the curtain on combat for the coalition.

"I don't want to understate the challenge that we have ahead of us," he said. "The Taliban is still a resilient and capable opponent." Even with the Afghans in the lead, "we fully expect that combat is going to continue."

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday to discuss efforts to reopen major roads used to supply NATO fighting forces in Afghanistan. White House officials said no deal was in place to reopen the supply lines but they cited "positive" signs in the ongoing discussions. "We believe we're moving in the right trajectory," said Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes.

Pakistan closed the roads nearly six months ago in protest of an errant NATO air strike that killed Pakistani soldiers. The two nations are now haggling over the price the alliance will pay, with Pakistan demanding many times more per truck than they were paid a year ago, U.S. officials said.

Obama found himself at the center of a second international summit in as many days, shifting from the rustic presidential retreat in Maryland to the Chicago scene he calls home.

Opening the discussions Sunday, Obama declared: "Just as we've sacrificed together for our common security, we will stand together united in our determination to complete this mission."

Advanced Prostate Cancer Drug May Help at Earlier Stage

WEDNESDAY, May 16 (HealthDay News) -- A drug approved to treat advanced prostate cancer appears to help men who have localized high-risk prostate cancer if given before surgery.

Adding Zytiga (abiraterone) to conventional hormonal treatments eliminated or nearly eliminated the prostate cancer in one-third of men with this often-lethal form, according to new research to be presented at next month's annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Chicago.

"This is one of the first -- if not the first -- study to show that you can make prostate cancer in the prostate gland itself disappear in a reproducible number of patients," ASCO official Dr. Nicholas Vogelzang said at a Wednesday press conference.

Commenting on the findings, Dr. Jay Brooks, chairman of hematology/oncology at Ochsner Health System in Baton Rouge, said, "This is exciting. It's a novel way to eliminate cancer before surgery."

However, Brooks, who was not involved in the study, cautioned that the findings were still preliminary and need further investigation.

Trying to shrink a tumor with chemotherapy and/or radiation before surgery is standard for other types of cancer, such as breast or colon, but hasn't to date shown a benefit in prostate cancer, study author Dr. Mary-Ellen Taplin, associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, explained at the news conference.

Localized high-risk prostate cancer, which is defined as prostate cancer in men with a prostate-specific antigen level above 20, high-grade disease (a Gleason score of 8 or more), and stage T3 disease (indicating the tumor has spread through the prostate), carries with it a poor prognosis.

Standard hormonal therapy, which stops the production of male hormones (androgens), has not been shown to be effective in this type of cancer when given before surgery. Nor has the surgery, which removes the entire prostate.

Zytiga blocks production of testosterone, which can promote the growth of prostate cancer cells, but in a different way than established hormonal treatments.

This small, phase 2 trial involved 56 men with an average age of 58, all of whom had had at least three positive biopsies for prostate cancer.

For the first three months, 27 men received the standard hormonal therapy leuprolide alone, followed by leuprolide plus Zytiga for another three months.

The remaining 29 men received the two-drug combination for the whole six months, after which all men in both groups underwent prostate surgery.

One-third of the men who had received leuprolide plus Zytiga for the entire six months saw complete or nearly complete elimination of their cancer.

By comparison, only 15 percent of men in the other group experienced these results, the investigators found.

Those who received the combination for only 12 weeks had much lower response rates.

The participants also received low doses of the steroid prednisone to prevent side effects from Zytiga, although side effects overall were minimal, said Taplin.

It's not clear at this point why some men responded to the combination therapy while others did not, and that is an area that needs to be studied, the researchers said.

"In highly select people who have this aggressive type of prostate cancer, I think this is an important area to investigate," Brooks noted. "We need to figure out which patients would potentially benefit."

According to study author Taplin, the research received some funding from Johnson & Johnson, the maker of Zytiga. She said the drug is currently U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved for patients with advanced prostate cancer that does not respond to hormone therapy, and costs about $5,000 per month.

The data and conclusions of research presented at medical meetings should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Mayor McGinn's New Broadband Strategy Isn't New

There's been some coverage of Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn's proposed broadband strategy recently that I'm pretty sure is getting it wrong. "Seattle pulls plug on its broadband network," the Seattle Times' Brier Dudley reported last week about the end of the city's free public Wi-Fi experiment along the Columbia City business district. "Seattle abandons plan for city broadband network," the SeattlePI.com's Scott Gutierrez added yesterday, reporting that the city is "ditching its years-long quest to build a city-sponsored fast broadband network."

Well, not exactly. Yesterday the mayor announced plans to seek a new ordinance that would permit the city to lease out to private partners more than 500 miles of city-owned fiber optic cable to help facilitate faster broadband to poorly served neighborhoods. Which is exactly what the mayor was talking about last year at a May 23, 2011 press conference he held in Pioneer Square:

"Today is a small tangible step," the mayor said, referring as much to his announcement that he would ask the City Council for permission to lease out city-owned conduit as he was to the ditch and work crew in the background. If the Council agrees, the city will put out a request for proposal to telco and cable operators to hook up and serve this four block stretch of Pioneer Square. If no one bids, McGinn said the city would consider "whether we can just do it ourselves."

The city ended up leasing its four-block stretch of Pioneer Square conduit to Comcast, which pulled fiber and is now serving more than 50 new customers in the neighborhood with high speed broadband service. That's exactly what McGinn is proposing for the rest of the 500 miles of city-owned fiber. And that's been his official broadband strategy for at least the past year.

Yes, the city shuttered the seven-year-old Columbia City public Wi-Fi test project last month, but public Wi-Fi was never part of McGinn's broadband plan, not even during the election. It's an entirely different technology than what the mayor has been pitching. So to view this as some sort of abandoning of McGinn's plan for a citywide broadband network is a misreading of events. McGinn is still pursuing citywide broadband, but via fiber to the home and business, not Wi-Fi.

And neither is McGinn abandoning the threat of building out a city owned and operated network. "If the private sector cannot get this done, then the City will have to look at doing it ourselves," McGinn wrote on his blog yesterday, echoing his words at last year's event. "That will take years to build and the cost would be significant," McGinn admits, "but it remains an option."

It's a carrot and stick approach. On the one hand McGinn is offering to lease city-owned conduit and dark fiber to private companies willing to offer high speed broadband to homes and businesses, lowering the upfront capital expense where the fiber already exists. On the other hand, if Comcast, CenturyLink et al continue to refuse to invest in bringing fiber to the home (and why should they when their near monopolies are currently profitable as-is?), they'll be in no position to complain should they suddenly find themselves in competition with a city-owned public broadband network.

What should we expect to happen? It's not clear. McGinn spokesperson Aaron Pickus says his office was pleasantly surprised when Comcast so quickly responded to last year's RFP for leasing the Pioneer Square conduit. Dozens of neighborhood businesses are benefiting from the partnership. So given the chance, perhaps service providers will be just as enthusiastic about leasing the rest of the 500 miles of under- or unused infrastructure scattered throughout the rest of the city?

Or perhaps a few years from now the lack of response from Internet service providers will provide the justification needed to move forwarded with a city owns and operated network?
