Tyler Wetherall: The Casas Of Cuba | Rumors and News.com

Eating a freshly made breakfast from antique porcelain plates beneath a teardrop chandelier in an old colonial house while being treated like an old family friend would be considered an experience possible in only hotels of the rarest kind. In Cuba, however, it?s practically normal.

Similar to a bed and breakfast, casa particulares were created in 1997 when the government changed the law to allow Cubans to rent out rooms in their homes to tourists as an additional source of income. All other forms of accommodation ? at least until the recent changes to the laws on private enterprise ? are owned by the government, and while some hotels are incredibly glamorous, you won?t get the experience of real Cuba that you have when living with a Cuban family.

Casas ? as they are shortened ? vary hugely. Some are very basic room and board. Others feel like you?ve returned to a long lost relative, and you eat with the family becoming part of their daily life. The minority are run more formally like mini-hotels. Whatever type of casa you want, you can probably track it down. Just remember to look for the official sign on the door ? two blue triangles on a white background ? which means the household pays an annual tax and possesses a license. Prices vary between $20 to $60 and normally include breakfast.

The prevalence of antiques is a happy accident, which some savvy casa owners have come to capitalize on, knowing it appeals greatly to outsiders. Due to the limitations on imported goods, there is a ?make do and mend? culture, and everything from crockery to cars are passed down through the generations. Even low income households are likely to have some interesting items whether it?s the 1950s china or turn-of-the-century kitchen fittings that, while common here, are a rare sight in the U.S.

In general, your casa family are your most valuable source of local information, who will warn you about the perils on the street and welcome you home after a long day exploring. Here I?ve highlighted three of my personal favourites in Havana.

1932

2012-08-07-DSC_0365_2.jpg2012-08-07-DSC_0367.JPG2012-08-07-DSC_0446.jpg

Visually stunning, historically fascinating and wonderfully welcoming, Casa 1932 is the sort of place every traveler hopes to end up in Cuba. Enter through the stained-glass doors, into this Art Deco haven, and then wander the rooms traveling in time through the objects around you. The leafy courtyard is an ode to ?50s Americana with old tin advertising signs on the walls, while the sumptuous dining room goes further back with art deco lamps, a table laid with 19th-century china and cabinets full of treasure, such as the gambling chips from the Havana?s last casino. While the house has been in owner and interior designer Luis Miguel?s family since 1932, hence the name and many antiques, he is a magpie for all things old, especially those with a story, and he?ll happily regale you with anecdotes about his collection. The breakfast is excellent, but it?s worth booking in for dinner one night. The chefs are incredibly skilled, and Luis makes the most charming host. The large bedrooms are all elegant, but the newest room, although the smallest, was my favourite for the attention to detail and atmosphere.

Casa Habana

2012-08-07-DSC_0445.JPG2012-08-07-DSC_0437.JPG

This casa has so much going for it. Occupying an early 19th-century townhouse with the decor to match, the central location couldn?t be better for exploring the cobbled streets of Havana Vieja with Plaza Cathedral and Plaza Vieja a hop and a skip away. The bedrooms have high ceilings, large windows with original green shutters overlooking the interior courtyard and are decoratively charming. But it?s the friendly vibe here that makes it stand out. The leafy roof terrace is a social hub, as guests enjoy a mojito from the bar while watching the sun set over the rooftops of the city.

Julio y Elsa Roque

2012-08-07-DSC_0488.JPG2012-08-07-DSC_0487.JPG

The home of this lovely couple is everything that is best about staying in casas. Their main room is overflowing with ethnic finds from around the globe, old photos of Cuba hang on the walls and the shelves are stacked with books and oddities. The kitchen has that cluttered bohemian feel of a lived in house that makes you feel instantly at ease, especially when sharing breakfast family style around the big table. The rooms are clean and simple, but you don?t come here that; you come for something more elusive. Julio and Elsa take care of their guests. They will sort out your taxis, reservations and any issues that come your way, but do it all with that easy charm that comes from genuine warmth.

Russian PM angered by failed Russian space launch

(AP) ? Russia's Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Thursday that this week's failed space launch has dented the nation's prestige and that those to blame must be held responsible.

A Proton-M booster rocket launched Monday failed to place two communications satellites into target orbits, a mishap that followed several other botched launches. An official investigation is under way.

Medvedev said Thursday the failure could have been caused by "traditional sloppiness." He says he will chair a government meeting next week to look into the case and name those responsible for the failure.

"We can't tolerate that any longer," Medvedev said at the start of a Cabinet session. "We are losing our prestige and billions of rubles."

Russia's space program has suffered a series of humiliating failures blamed on manufacturing flaws and engineering mistakes. They included the loss of a robotic probe designed to study a moon of Mars that was launched in November and eventually came crashing down in January.

In August 2011, a Soyuz booster rocket similar to those ferrying crews and cargo to the International Space Station failed, raising the prospect of leaving the space outpost unmanned. Russian space officials eventually blamed the crash on an "accidental" manufacturing flaw and checked all rockets for similar problems, and the Soyuz launches resumed.

Those failures followed other botched launches. Russia lost three navigation satellites in December 2010, then a military satellite in February 2011 and a telecommunications satellite in August of that year.

Officials said the failed launches were rooted in the post-Soviet industrial meltdown that has badly hurt a once proud space program, stymying its modernization. Despite a steady increase of funding thanks to oil revenues, Russia's space industries continue to rely on outdated equipment and an aging workforce, and quality standards have degraded.

Hibernation altered by climate change takes a toll on Rocky Mountain animal species

ScienceDaily (Aug. 8, 2012) ? Climate change is causing a late wake-up call from hibernation for a species of Rocky Mountain ground squirrel and the effect is deadly.

A University of Alberta-led international research team examined data on a population of Columbian ground squirrels and found a trend of late spring snow falls has delayed the animals' emergence from hibernation by 10 days over the last 20 years.

U of A Evolutionary Ecologist Jeff Lane explained that Columbian ground squirrels are on a tight schedule; Females mate four days after emerging from hibernation. They give birth 24 days later. The newborns are nursed for 28 days, and then they're on their own.

"Losing just 10 days during their short active period reduces their opportunity to eat enough food so they can survive through the next hibernation period of eight to nine months," said Lane.

Research shows there's little wiggle room in the ground squirrel's life cycle. The period of plant growth, their food supply, is only three to four months long on their home turf, skirting the Rocky Mountains.

"Our data shows that over the life of the study, the survival rate of adult females has fallen by 20 per cent and much of this could be due to late emergence from their burrows brought on by late spring snowfalls, "said Lane. " The researchers say the study area's population has gone from one of growth 20 years ago to its current state of just maintaining population stability.

The study area is a 200-metre by 400-metre block in a sub-alpine meadow west of Calgary. Lane says the data was collected through observation and by trapping and releasing all the ground squirrels in the study area to monitor their condition. The study area was set up by U of A biologists in 1992. Lane began his hibernation study five years ago and collaborated with researchers in Scotland, France and the U of A. Lane was the lead researcher on the paper that was published August 8, in the online edition of the journal Nature.

Pia Toscano to Guest Star on Glee?

With Jessica Sanchez already in negotiations to appear on Glee Season 4, sources now say the Fox hit may not be finished with American Idol finalists:

Pia Toscano is rumored to be closing in on a guest-starring gig.

The beautiful and talented singer was given the boot fairly early on in Season 10, in what many consider to be the most shocking elimination in show history. She's done just fine for herself since, however.

Toscano both sang on Dancing with the Stars and dated hot professional Mark Ballas for awhile. She has also signed a record deal.

As for Glee? Pia has no acting experience, but an insider tells E! News she has read for a role and "they absolutely loved her. She's a huge fan of the show."

Whether or not she ends up on television, Toscano has booked a part in Grace Unplugged, an upcoming film about a struggling musician. It starts filming this month in Alabama.

"I'm so excited about my very first acting role in Grace Unplugged," Toscano says. "I'm honored to be a part of this amazing film, and my character is a reflection of me, which makes this special for me."

Jury hears tangled web of trader-turned-FBI-informant Khan

NEW YORK (Reuters) - She used the names of her housekeeper and her gardener to buy cell phones to evade detection. She lied to the FBI and to her "buddies" on Wall Street.

Former technology company researcher-turned-FBI-informant Roomy Khan went to great lengths to conceal a tangled web of insider trading. But she ended up pleading guilty and testifying against a California hedge fund manager to whom she says she fed corporate secrets.

Khan, 53, a onetime friend of hedge fund founder Raj Rajaratnam, is one of the more intriguing figures in the government's crackdown on Wall Street insider trading.

Testifying at the trial of Whitman Capital founder Doug Whitman in federal court in Manhattan on Tuesday, Khan said she told Whitman about her sources of inside information at Polycom Inc and Google Inc .

One was Sunil Bhalla, a Polycom executive at the time to whom she referred in her conversations with Whitman as "my guy." The other, called "the IR lady," was Shammara Hussain, then of the investor relations firm Market Street Partners, which had Google as a client. Lawyers for Bhalla and Hussain -- who faced civil charges but were not criminally charged -- could not immediately be reached to comment.

A former Intel Corp and Galleon employee, Khan testified she had two or three meetings with Hussain. "I gave her a phone which I had purchased on my housekeeper's account. I did not want her (Hussain) to be connected to me."

Khan said Whitman, her neighbor in Atherton, California, sent her a basket of flowers with a "thank you" note when she tipped him about a July 2007 Google Inc second-quarter earnings announcement. The information came from Hussain, she said. Khan shared the same information with others she referred to in court as her "buddies on Wall Street."

Hussain agreed to pay $48,000 in January to settle a civil lawsuit brought by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, according to court records.

Khan pleaded guilty to criminal charges in October 2009 but has yet to be sentenced. Dozens of traders, hedge fund managers and a former Goldman Sachs director, Rajat Gupta, have pleaded guilty or been convicted since 2009.

GARDENER'S PHONE

Khan's cooperation with the FBI and U.S. prosecutors helped the government's broad investigations of insider trading, including the May 2011 conviction of onetime billionaire Rajaratnam. He is serving an 11-year prison term.

Khan did not testify at Rajaratnam's trial.

She told the Whitman trial on Tuesday that when the FBI came knocking on her door in November 2007, "I lied about what was my relationship and what information Mr Sunil Bhalla gave me." Bhalla agreed last September to pay $85,000 to settle a civil lawsuit by the SEC, according to court records.

Even after Khan agreed in January 2008 to record phone conversations under the direction of the FBI, she said she wanted to contact her select group of associates secretly.

Khan, dressed in a black pants suit and pink shawl, said: "This time I went to my gardener and used that phone to communicate with some of my Wall Street colleagues."

She spoke in a matter-of-fact tone throughout her testimony, saying she told them the SEC had asked a few questions, but nothing about the FBI investigation.

Khan said Whitman "always pushed me and pushed me to get Polycom information" from Bhalla. Prosecutors played a recording of one phone conversation between Khan and Whitman in January 2009 in which he asks, "You hearing anything on Polycom?"

Whitman is charged with securities fraud and conspiracy, which carry a combined possible maximum prison sentence of 25 years. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Prosecutors accuse Whitman of illegally using inside sources to get advance information on the financial performance of Google Inc, Polycom Inc and Marvell Technology Group Ltd between 2006 and 2009. They said he made $900,000 in profits.

The trial before U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff started a week ago and is expected to last three weeks.

The case is USA v Doug Whitman in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 12-125.
